Sources and method

How facts are checked

Every claim on this site links to where it comes from. A claim we cannot source is not published. Facts were last verified .

Nothing about the future is stated as settled: a vote that is expected is called expected. Where nothing has been announced about a place, we say so and give the date we checked.

What each kind of source is trusted for

doc A primary document: an ordinance, an agreement, a council or court record. Trusted for what was decided, signed or filed.

ref News coverage and other published third-party sources, such as tourism fact sheets, maps and a business’s directions page for its own address. Trusted for what the publisher reported.

archive A library or historical record. Trusted for history.

site A business’s own website. Used only for plain facts about that business, such as when it opened and what it offers, and never for anything about the ballpark deal.

We do not cite Wikipedia or other wikis. Where one led us to a fact, we cite the source it cites.
